pdfDocs 4.7 U5 introduced new page numbering options to make it easier to comply with guidelines governing the submission of PDF binders to Courts in different regions.
These options allow users to choose whether the Cover Page and Table of Contents – or any other index pages – are included in the page numbering.
For example, the UK Supreme Court requires that a PDF binder be a single PDF numbered in ascending order – regardless of the original page numbers of any documents that have been combined.
Importantly, index pages and authorities need to be numbered as part of the PDF binder, since they are considered part of the single document.
So, if a PDF binder has a Cover Page (one page) and a Table of Contents (four pages) and several documents, page numbering will start on the Cover Page.
It is the same in Ireland, where the Irish Court of Appeal requires single PDF binders that are indexed and sequentially paginated.
Page numbering must start on the first page of the first document – including if it is an index or Table of Contents page – and flow throughout the entire PDF binder.
However, in Australia, Victorian Courts require that page numbering within each PDF binder (Court Book) not include any index pages.
This requirement means that if a PDF binder has a Cover Page (one page) and a Table of Contents (four pages), the numbering should start on page five, aka the first page of the first document.
Whatever the requirements for PDF binder submission in your part of the world, pdfDocs makes it easier to apply the right page numbering. Scroll down to learn how to start using these new features step-by-step.
Choose where page numbering starts in pdfDocs
1. From the Binder Project > select Home > Numbering > More Settings.
When the Numbering icon is blue, it indicates numbering is turned ON and will be applied during the Make Binder process
2. In the Project Binder Options window > select the Numbering Sets tab > Header and Footer sub-tab.
3. Select the General sub-tab and set values for:
- Auto Page Numbering, including Starting Position, Starting Number, Format, and No. of Digits.
Start Position will control on which page the numbering begins. The default is the first ‘document,’ i.e., the Cover Page and Table of Contents are not included in page count and will not be numbered.
- Extended Page Numbering applies only to the field codes <<PageNumberEx>> and <<DocLastPageNumberEx>> and controls if numbering needs to restart at the Folder level.
Page Numbering and Auto Page Numbering will be guided by settings in Auto Page Numbering or Extended Page Numbering sections. Custom Page Numbering will utilize pagination information from your documents in the binder.
4. Click OK to save all selections and changes and close the window.
You will only see how this Header/Footer set is applied when you click Make Binder to generate the final PDF.
